I've had the opportunity to restore a number of Farmalls and Olivers since my grandpa taught me how to. The questions you're asking are always dilemmas for me. I love making things look original, just like you do, but I'm not as much a stickler on some details. I painted my IH W4 Oliver red because it was brighter and I liked the color. I use vinyl cutout decals now because they don't show faded paint as much. I've painted with and without hardener and personally, I like hardener. It's more fun to look at and far more durable (in my opinion).
I do, however, use my tractors for plowing whenever I can because it makes them run better and I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing them used the way they were meant to be used.
There are two comments on here that I like the most though. The one Jim said about the way using them returns them to the state you found them in, and that it's nice to have a tractor in the condition your relatives had it. With nearly all my tractors, I've had to let go of the "perfect museum quality," so I could use them some and actually get continued enjoyment out of them long after restoration. That doesn't mean they can't still look good. To me, looking a little used is as "authentic" as it gets.
