Another good way of doing it is to check out the date code on the major castings. It will be three characters separated by dashes. The last letter is the year in which the casting was made.

No, that is not an accident at U and W. The book says 1951 is W, but the S/N of my M fits for 1951 and all my castings end with U. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some 1951's with V casting codes. :-)
