Wayne, I have several thoughts on this and they are worth exactly what you paid for them. 1. Very little oil gets to the head, so smoking other than a little at start up or high vacuum, is PROBABLY rings. 2. If the smoking is really, truly, absolutely from the valve guides, then they are worn enough they should be replaced. Years ago when money was tight the guides were "knurled", but that involved valve/head removal.
