Maybe it's just old, thus worn. The 300-up uses Hytran, perhaps the equivalent of 10W. I don't know if IH changed anything to compensate for the lighter oil or not. 5th is not an actual gear, but direct drive. a splined shaft fits into another shaft. 5th has a rather loud hum which is normal, but I wouldn't call it a whine. Perhaps the differential gears make that noise at the higher speed of 5th. If the other gears sound normal, put 140W in it and see if that helps.
