Bob's correct on what it does. Assuming yours works, you can keep it working longer by shifting it correctly. Don't pull the lever back in an effort to try to slow the tractor when coasting in 5th gear. That's a shortcut to destroying that TA unit. It may be shifted forward or backward when under load with no problem. The shift should be reasonably quick. Trying to "ease" it forward has the tractor in both ranges momentarily, and will burn out the TA clutch over time.
