Only two things will prevent a well maintained tractor from running: gas or spark. With your creative use of choke, you seem to have eliminated spark as a problem, and you seem to have detected a situation where things are leaning out. So, the advice of the others is sound. Clean out the filter and the carb, and I'll bet she'll run like a purring kitten.
I have just the opposite situation. For a long time, if I even thought of using the choke on my M, she'd bog and snort. And sure enough, things got bad enough with my being lazy, and now she floods and doesn't want to run at all. Sunk float or bad needle and seat, or some such like that there. I need to clean and rebuild the carb. Not the most glamourous of jobs. Boring really, but necessary as heck.
