I just took about the same amount of play out of an IH 560. The wear was in the pin that moves in the worm gear in the steering box. It should be tapered and round, mine had two or three flat spots in it. It will not show up real well untill you have the gearbox apart. You can try setting the slack in the worm but if the pin has flat spots it will make it very hard to steer anywere but in the straight ahead position. No room here to explain why I had to mix and match parts but it may be easier for you to find another steering box. I didn't ask IH how much the pin was worth.
