If the transmission cover is off, the hard part is done. Get yourself an I&T service manual. The IH manual does cover the trans, but not as well (in my opinion) as the I&T. Both assume that you know what you are doing. A parts book is always helpful. If you are going to keep the tractor, the Operators Manual has a lot of basic information on maintenence, some repairs, and lube capacities.
The tractor does not have to be split to replace the transmission input bearing, but you will get to crawl under it. Check the input shaft pilot bearing and replace it if there is any doubt as to it's condition. Check the rest of the trans and rear end bearings before you go too far. The bearings can run $100 or so a piece for good quality ones.
