If the hours are correct and it is in really good shape otherwise, it could be worth up to $15,000.
856 in general I've seen go for anywhere from $4000 to $15000.
As for what to watch out for, not much! These were some of the last over-built tractors from IH. Our 1256 held up to a lot of abuse as our main loader tractor for feeding cattle, and use in the field, etc. No transmission, engine, or rearend trouble at all. The TA went out shortly after we got it (around 6500 hours) and we put a few clutches in it due to the abuse from the loader.
If it starts good when cold and doesn't smoke for more than a few minutes and the TA works, shift through all the gears and listen for noises, the usual stuff...
