Both Kero, and distillate are similar in basic HC composition. Distillate is less refined, and carries with it substantial residual materials from the crude. It is what was refered to as tractor fuel. It was far less expensive than gasoline, while similar in total energy (low compression required to keep it from causing dramatic spark knock, keeps it from producing the power that it carries) Kerosine is much more adequately processed. It is refined to eliminate the "ash" sulfer, and contaminants while preserving the energy. Kerosine needs to be clean enough to use in lamps and unvented heaters W/O dramatic smoke or smell. Today, Jet fuel, and Kero are very similar. Tractor fuel is not made at all, and diesel is becomming much more like Kero than it ever has been. Heating oil and diesel are also very comparable fuels, with no major differences (coloring being one) today. JimN
