I can't answer all your questions we had a SMTAD when I was a little pup in my early teens we used to pull that thing around the country side to start it in the winter but that was on the gas side but now that I look back and got a little smarter I think our problem was the points on the gas side because you had to keep the ignition button pulled out to charge the battery. Anyway back to your other question I don't think you can get the air out without open drains and cracking lines because air bubbles will compress and and make it difficult to lift the nozzle seats to allow the air to escape. Can you start it on gas and then switch back and forth to diesel and back to see if it will pickup I'd run it awhile on gas to heat up the cylinders before I'd try to make the switches. There has to be some old McCormick diesel mechanics on here that can help because that system is older than dirt.IMHO CT
