There is a gasket between the axle housing and the transmission housing. I don"t know how far you can pull the axle housing out after removing the bolts, it can"t be too far because of the bull gear that is mounted on the axle inside the transmission. You can give it a try. Other option is to remove PTO so that you can reach inside and unscrew the bolt that holds the bull gear on the axle, then put a couple of wedges under the gear so that it will not drop down when you pull the axle housing and axle out as one unit. Unless you have a hoist, you will want to remove wheel and hub from axle before atempting to remove the axle housing.
