Rick: There were a lot of changes, however the basic design never changed from 1939 to 1979. Most of the mechanical changes occured during Super A production and not at model change as most folks believe. Super A saw a lot of mechanical upgrades, starting with live hydraulics, although there is evidence a few A were equipped with hydraulics. Around 1950 the steering box changed along with tyrod assembly. New tyrods are automotive type. The engine block changed at serial number 310300. Around 52 there was an upgrade to case hardening of gears, rear end,transmission and final drives. In 53 the ekectrical changed from cutout relay to voltage regulator. First pressurized radiator happened at serial number 336711 in 1953. Late 53 the hydraulics were upgraded, final drives changed and an upgrade to brakes occured.
At serial number 356001, in 1954, block part number 354898 R1, introduced back in 51 was changed to 3-1/8" pistons giving it 123 cubic inches for the first time in SA. Block part number 354898 R1 is the same block as used in SC and had always been C-123 in that application. IH kept the SA at C-113 by use of thicker sleeves. The radiator size increased, water pump was added and the tractor was offically called Super A1. Only 1,957 of those were ever built before the model 100 was introduced. Fast hitch was introduced near the end of Super A production.
Other than that there was very little mechanical change other than 140 got an automotive type water pump on fan hub. It also changed to 12 volt at serial number 26801 and to alternator at serial number 57723. The rest of the change is cosmetic. I may have missed a few things, as I'm doing this from memory this morning.
