Ken: Most Farmalls of that era have the plug forward of brakes, on clutch pedal side, about 1/3 distance from bottom on transmission case. It should be a 1/2" plug, maybe a bit larger.
Most of my experience has been 300 and 560. I had a 504 and 656, came with a farm I bought. I know the 656 had a dipstick, think the 504 did as well, but I didn't keep it so I'm not certain. That 504 and 656 were 1967 models, and that would be last year of 504. I know most early 504 used the fill to level plug.
