I am wondering why you took the breaker plate out. It's certainly not necessary, and you can see that it doesn't help anything either.

You put the screws in the part of the points set that hold it to the breaker plate first and partially tighten them. This keeps things from moving around quite as much. Some spring bands have a slot and others have a hole, but you put the spring on the threaded post and hold it while you start the nut. You hold it with anything you have available (thumb, screwdriver, needle-nosed pliers). If there are wires that go on the same threaded post, you can clip the end of the connector on the end of the wire to make it slotted. That way you don't have to hold too many bits in place at once.
