Like Wesley said, a closed choke plate makes for more vacuum, so the starter has to work harder to turn the engine over.
SuperCs generally don't take much choke to start.
Mine starts quite easily if I close the choke before I even crank. In warm weather, I'll open the choke as soon as it fires, usually only a couple of turns. In bitter cold, she'll fire quickly and it might take as much as fifteen or twenty seconds to ease/feather the choke open to keep her runnin' right.
