magman: I changed my tractors to clutch starter drives close to 15 years ago. I took both my Super A and 130 starters to an auto electric rebuilder that I had done business with for years. He rebuilt both starters and when they came back one starter would engage on either tractor and the other wouldn't engage on either tractor. Granted my ring gears were not in top shape.
I examined the starters and noticed the one that wouldn't work was a Bendix, however the other was something I'd never seen before. It looked very similar to a clutch drive on a chain saw. I called my rebuilder friend back, told him what was going on. He said, " Bring it back, I only had one starter drive in stock, and had to send over to the CaseIH dealer for the second one." I guess he misunderstood me on the phone, as he had a Bendix already to put in when I got there. I said,"That bendix is the junk, I want the other type starter drive". Of course I hadn't realized which drive came from CaseIH until I got there.
I drove to the CaseIH dealer, Al took my starter apart. I'm thinking that was about 93, and the CaseIH dealer partsman said they had been selling the clutch drive close to 20 years then.
These clutch drives are a very superior product to the old Bendix. They will work well on less than perfect ring gears. They engage so much smoother, great on all tractors but exceptionally great on 12 volt conversions. Those starter drives have been on there 15 years now, never had a starter lock up since. Very unusual, I've seen those old Bendix lock up on tractors less the 5 years old. My 130 works so well, I didn't bother to change the ring gear when I installed a new clutch assembly 5 years ago, and that tractor is the one I run all winter.
