The timing mark is on the smooth part of the flywheel. It's not a very deep mark, and hard to see and the flywheel often has oil and grease on it, obscuring the mark. Get No. 1 cylinder as close as you can to TDC of the compression stroke by taking the plug out and rotating the engine until you feel air coming out the plug hole, then feel though the plug hole with a wire to get the piston at the top. The mark should then be somewhere near the bottom. Then clean that area very well with some solvent to get the flywheel clean and you should be able to locate the mark. Use a good light so you can see better. The mark on the clutch housing that you align the flywheel does not amount to much, just a "bump" in the cast metal. It's at the very bottom, so the flywheel mark is at the very bottom when the piston is at TDC.
