MH, If the compression is indeed good, then it sounds like a Injection pump timing issue, Acrid white smoke is an indication of very late injection timing. There were 3 engines in this series from Neuss the D155,(3cyl),D206(4cyl), & D310(6cyl). They all used the same inj pump timing gear. There should be a bunch of different numbers stamped on the gear( something like 1 thru 8). One of these #'s will be for your engine in its application. Once the number is aligned with the mark on the idler gear, then the pump can be timed.
