Hank has the right idea. The wrist pin is slightly offset to stop piston slap. With the wrist pin offset, the piston is always a bit loaded to one side so it does not rattle. The notch makes sure you have the offset to the correct side. The engineers have it figured out where the offset should be according to combustion chamber shape.
