r4etired, What you are calling a overdrive is what's known as a roadgear, Yes they run off the top shaft and the tractor must be in neutral for those to work. The overdrives ran on the main shaft this was just like the 9 speeds only the F-20 was 4 speeds so it double the main shaft speed before the trans. in overdrive. A over-under would give you 4 speeds under direct drive, 4 In direct drive, and 4 speeds in overdrive. for a total of 12 speeds forward. The ones I have are overdrives this gives me the 4 direct or standard gears plus 4 more in overdrive for a total of 8 speeds. In overdrive it doubles the main shaft speed and the PTO speed. My tractor had a fast 3rd gear 12.5 mph and when shifting into overdrive it put it at 25 mph.
