i would say it depends on your needs. often i've found i've needed slower speeds than available in the field and faster than available in the yard, or the other way around--even with an 8 fwd 2 reverse speeds tranny (ford). A good M will have enough power at lower engine rpm (and resulting lower ground speeds) to do quite a bit of hard yard work before you need to open 'er up.
