F for Farmall (Intertantionals got an I), B for Model B.
Now about that A. I know A Models were FAA or IAA (Farmall or International) and AVS were FAAV and all but the eariest BNs were FABN. About all I have been able to come up with is that all those tractors' serial numbers came out of the same pot/sequence. Thus FA is the serial number sequence, and the last letter(s) of the prefix indicate the actual model.
