If the tractor has an inspection cover at the bottom,pull it off and have a look.With the engine shut off,and in neutral,have someone shove the pedal down,and if you can,turn the input shaft with your hand.If you can't reach it,jack one wheel clear,put it in gear,then turn the wheel.With the clutch released,it should turn easily.As a rule of thumb,the release bearing should be about 3/16 of an inch away from the fingers of the plate with the pedal up,or thereabouts.
I'd say without seeing it by what you say you have the disc in backwards.The disc of your clutch should have a center hub that has the springs on one side,that side faces the plate.If you put it in backwards,this hub will be up against the flywheel bolts,bolt the plate on it,and you have a bound up clutch.
