timing engine

on the ih 340 tractor it has a gas c-135 engine . did i time this ok, i first got # 1 cylinder up on compression stroke, then found where rotor was pointing and hooked that plug wire to number 1. i started the tractor and seem to run a bit rough, i then turned the distributor until the motor sounded good. i did not have timing light, so have no clue how close iam, i can say the engine sounds nice at all levels of rpm's thanks for any input.
