I think the others have set you on the right track with the sludge issue. The oil filter housing cap came in 2 styles. The early ones were pot metal and cracked from over-tightening. The later ones were stamped steel and resisted cracking but will warp easily if over-tightened. When you get a replacement, make sure you re-install with both the lip gasket and the center sealing washer between the cap and the stud or it will still leak.
