I have that M that lost a screw in the throttle plate and it still has the brass screen above the carb. When this happened (In the 60s) it made a very loud hammering sound. We pulled the head to find the problem and found the brass screw on top of a piston. I haven't had the head off so I do not know what type of pistons it has. Had a similar thing happen with my 6-cyclinder Ford pickup. I broke off a spark plug and part of the plug tip got stuck in the top of the head. I managed to scrape the top of the piston with a screwdriver and cleaned it off. The pieces went out the exhaust.
