The earley ones had the 312 american diesel and the later ones had the german 310. Both are good engines. I have a 686 with the 312 and its a screamer. Starts good and is good on fuel with plenty of power. The german 310 is also a very good engine. I have a 756 with a 310 in it. It is a cold blooded engine and sometimes takes a little funny gas to coax it to life. It runs very quiet and smooth with plenty of power and it just sips fuel. Parts for the 310's fuel system are pricey and getting hard to find but it will run 2X as long as a 312 before needing an overhaul.
