Unless it is dry like where I live in SW Kansas -- I have left parts for months like that - no rust. Also, I do not like to put phosphoric acid (metal prep) on cast, for fear it will lift the paint later. I have done that in the past without problems, but now I don't think it's a good idea. As you say epoxy is the way to go if you are in a rusty area.
