Had the same problem with my C. The cover was warped pitted and worn down. The best way to save it is by polishing the cover with wet sandpaper. You put the sandpaper on a mirror or on any other surface that you know is perfectly flat and lock it in place. You put some white spirit or water on it and you start polishing the cover in an 8-shaped motion untill your cover is completely blank. This way it will seal up nicely. The best way to seal you pump is with sealing paper about 0.8mm thick. I used this trick on my pump and I've got to say, works like a charm :).
