One of those speed reducers went for $600 at an auction I attended year and a half ago. It is a planetary gear set. The housing didn't look too strong.
If you go to the Farmall Cub site, several people have made the point that the reducer is only meant to slow down the tractor. It can't be used to amplify torque without breaking the left hand final drive. Apparently the upper shaft (pinion shaft) will shear.
It looks like a lousy piece of engineering. When in low range, the differential spider is in constant motion. They don't have the bearings for that kind of abuse.
But what the heck. People who work Cubs are used to repairing them.
