I"ve been through some of this, also. I went through three switches before I realized that the lever on my M was pushing the starter switch sideways almost as much as it was pushing it forward. The first switch gave up in the manner you describe. On the second, the cap came loose. On the third, I noticed the entire barrel of the switch was bent upward where it mounted on the base. The common after-market "Made in Mexico" or somewhere-else-type switches don"t seem to be nearly as tough as the originals.
