What happens to the injectors when they get a lot of hours on them is the opening pressure drops off. As the pressure drops they do not do as good a job of atomizing the fuel. That leads to more smoke and less power.
The down side of getting the pressure back where it should be is, if you have a weak pump you may find the the engine will be harder to start because the pump has to work harder to open the injectors.
