Well, I went ahead and took my entire wiring system off my H and started fresh. I priced a cutout from NAPA and nearly had a heart attack... $90. ouch! I bought a solid state one from a local gen/starter rebuild shop for about $20. It's rated at 25 amps and says it will work on 6, 12, or 24 v. systems, and as an experiment, I can live w/ $20 vs $90.. Anyway, I also disassembled the switch and checked all the contacts and all seems good. I rewired everthing according to a wiring diagram I got on this forum, and it seems to work fine, except the charge rate isn't what I would call great. The battery is weak right now, and barely turns the motor over. Would a bad cell, or some other battery malady cause the poor charging rate? It shows virtually no charge on LOW, and only about 7 amps on HIGH charge. Am I overlooking something? I attached a direct ground from the ground side of the field resistor on the switch to insure a good ground, and did the field to ground bypass test, which would slightly increase the charge rate when the switch is on L and makes no difference when the switch is on H... which I suspect is exactly how it should be. I'm gonna put the battery on the trickle charger tonight and see what the morning brings.
