OK, we're getting closer then. Does the charge rate stay constant no mater how long you run it (cut-out) or does it start out high and then taper off as the battery becomes fully charged. If it stays constant what is the charging rate? I'm currently having a minor problem with my '49 H in that it does still have the cut-out system but I can't vary it from high to low. But with some previous help from BobM and others I know where to look. When the generator field windings are connected directly to ground the generator puts out full charge and is limited by the position of the third brush. Low charge is run through a resistor in the light switch box and SHOULD limit the charge rate to about 1-3 amps. My resistor and all wiring is good but suspect a shorted field terminal on the generator. Haven't had time to check it though.
