As far as I know, all IHC tractors were gray (red wheels) until they switched to the red in 1937. I expect that there was a specific serial number attached to this change for each model. Someone else who is closer to these things these days can probably give that info to anyone who wants it. Story goes that red was easier to spot on the highway when more and more tractors had rubber tires. Don't know if this is true. I have some doubts. There is no doubt that the red tractors are more eye-catching. But they're pretty good lookin' if the gray and red is shiny. There are some pretty good looking tractors with other colors, too: John Deere green and yellow, Case yellow and red, for example. In the early days, I don't think farmers would have given a hoot about the color, as long as the critter was reliable. Everything became subject to heavy advertising in the 30s; you have only to look at old magazines to see airplanes pictured as zooming up in the sky, cars as sleek and fast, and then, when tractors got the styling treatment in the late 30s, ads for them often made them look sleek and stylish. I can still remember going to an IHC dealer when I was not even 10 and going "Wow!" over the H and M that sat on the floor. Fortunately, IHC put more than styling into these tractors, as did most major manufacturers, I believe.
