Mifsud: Serial number is quite important here, as there was a major change in SA brakes in late 53 or early 54. The old type were little more than band around a drum, anchored at over the top side with a pull rod going from bottom side direct to pedal linkage. There is very little can jam on those older type.
The new type have a pivot you can see in entrance to final drive. Both ends of band hook to pivot and the activator rod tilts pivot to tighten band both ways. What happens with this newer type is one of the band ends or possibily the pivot break, allowing the pivot to jamb on the drum. This pivot is designed to give more mechanical advantage at brake pedal. I have heard of the new type jambing as you describe.
