If the gears messed up the cam may be off so that it could be hard to find compression on # 1. First turn engine until the TDC notch on front crank pulley lines up with pointer. Then see if the distributor rotor is pointing to # 1 spark plug wire or 180 degrees away. If so its probably still in time unless it happened to get exactly 180 off. A compression check will usualy tell if cam is off. You can pull the pump and inspect that gear and cam gear by turning engine. Try to shake the cam gear forward and back to check for hub breakage. If bad the other poster said what to do. A relief valve set no higher than 1000 PSI should be used in a stock M h live hydraulic system. With one 5 seconds shouldn't hurt anything unlees on the verge of breaking already.
