The fluid in the gauge is not water, it is a compound designed to have an expansion rate that is consistent when in the range of from above freezing, to 250 degrees F. I think Keith has the answer if you want it. A replacement gauge was in your future anyway if I recall, just use a candy thermometer in the radiator neck in the mean time, The bulb will still block off the hole in the engine, just use some side cuts to snip the remaining capillary tube.
