Grandpa had a 656 gas standard shift and Uncle Mike had a 656 gas hydro. Both pulled 4 14s but the hydro was weaker in red clay than the standard with T/A. Both tractors were bought new in the late 60s and my cousin still has Grandpa's 656 - used daily on farm. The hydro lasted until the late 90s and both tractors had lived a hard life. In the early 70s we conventional tilled approx 700 acres with these two 656 tractors and one 706 with a minimum of three passes (plow, disk, disk). The hydro was great for hay baler, cultivating, bush-hog, planter, etc. Modern combines are hydro for independent ground speed control so unless you plan on plowing a lot of ground with it no worries!
