I think some of the manuals say to push the switchover lever down or back for starting on gas. I think that must be for the W series or is a misprint. All that I have ever seen, (and on the one I own) you push the switchover lever forward. It should stay there on it's own. If it does not, something in the linkage is messed up. So to start, switchover lever forward and the diesel speed control lever all the way down in the shut off position. Mine takes full choke to start and then you fiddle with the choke to keep it running. Rarely takes more than two turns to start. After warming for a couple of minutes, pull back the starting lever and advance the diesel speed control at the same time. If the engine is warm enough and all working as it should, it should then be running on diesel.
