The trick is to ignore degrees of dwell, and instead work & think using percentage of dwell. That skips the confusion about number of cylinders and correct degrees dwell number. Adjust the points to give around 60% - 66% dwell. Once you got the points adjusted clean off the timing marks and pointer. Look up the timing specification and follow any procedure given to adjust timing. At an engine idle speed below what kicks in the centrifugal spark advance carefully twist the distributor housing to bring the pointer to the proper mark. Snug down the distributor clamp screw. Like Red sez, run the engine speed up and down and observe that the timing advances as engine speed goes up and returns to the set point at slow idle. If the timing does not change smoothly, then you need to do some work on the centrifugal advance mechanism- weak springs, worn pivots and gummy lube are common sources of trouble. Good luck!
