if it was run low on oil and still working, and now its clunking, i assume is a low frequency pounding, at the very least i would suspect the main bearings are gone. unfortunately, when you start cooking bearings, they send small particles of metal thru the oil gallery and in to all the areas of the motor. you also probably have worn / scored rod bearings, same with the cam bearings, and probably wrist pin bushing wear. drain the oil in a clean pan and check it for metal filings. also pull the oil filter and examine it for same. prolly find metal flakes. drop the oil pan, pull the center main cap and check the bearing. also check a few rod bearings. if they are scored up, time for a major overhaul. dont run it anymore before you check it all out. if you do and it scatters, you repair costs go up exponentially.
