There are several possible problems. A 51 super C has (from the factory) a 6volt positive ground system. with a generator, voltage regulastor, amp gauge, and a starter switch using a rod to mechanically connect the contacts inside (at the starter). If yours has had an alternator put on it from a automotive/truck application, it will (most likely be 12 volt negative ground.
If you put the battery in incorrectly, with either system, turn it around.
If the sparks were serious and you left it connected, things may be toasted a bit and need some diagnosis. The ignition switch can go bad, but it usually fails by not working, not by staying on. THe sparks fron the ignition being on would not make you excited they would be mild little sparks. Let us know if you have an alternator retrofit, or stock system, or what. JimN
