I use PPG, have never used DuPont. But they are likely equivalent and a matter of personal preference to those who have used both. The description you gave for what you want leads to base coat-clear coat, the same system that is used on new cars. BUT, in your situation, meaning a garage and limited space, you should use either Case-IH 2150 or unhardened acrylic enamel. The best gloss occurs with hardened paint. The hardener contains isocyanates, which are the nastiest chemicals you can breathe, considering health effects. You should/MUST use a supplied air system, not a charcoal mask to protect your lungs, as you can get sick with only one exposure to them (almost happened to me. Also, your neighbors, if close, are likely to complain about the smell. Iso's themselves have no odor, but if they check around and find out what iso's are, you could be in trouble. I use hardener, but I have the proper protective equipment and no close neighbors. All that aside, it is not the brand, but the type of paint. Types from worst to best are alkyd enamel (TSC, etc), acrylic modified alkyd enamel (Case-IH), unhardened acrylic enamel, hardened acrylic enamel, acrylic urethane single stage, acrylic urethane base coat-clear coat. The urethanes will not cure without hardener. Your experience and technique are going to have more effect than the type of paint you use. There are many people on the paint and body work forum on this site that can answer your questions. Also, CA has many more restrictions on what body shops can use (don't know about hobbiests) than any other state, you might check and see what the rules in CA are.
