Dont know about corn pickers but I am working on a New Idea transplanter and they talk about slack chain in the operators manual. Those chains are the hammer on kind and if they get in a bind the links will pull apart and cause the slack. Removing a link will bind it even more just like what your experiencing.
You can get those chains at Tractor Supply so it may pay off to just get a new chain.
