My father had a '29 10-20 that I drove for a good 10 years. The exhaust pipe came out under the gas tank, as you describe yours. I have vague recollections of a MUFFLER under the hood, but it's been probably 55 years since I've seen the thing that it's all pretty vague now. One thing I do remember: the exhaust pipe is in a dangerous place. Our tractor caught fire when somebody filled the tank with the engine running (very common back then--cranking problems, and all that). Fuel spilled, hit the exhaust, whoosh! Of course nobody should fill with the motor running, but this particular design is especially likely to cause a problem.
