The gas/diesel lever is up for gas and down for diesel.
The turning knob that goes to the carb is the gas throttle. Left is slow -- right is faster. There is also a choke knob that is push/pull.
If you think all systems are go with the gas side, go for it. If everything is functioning correctly, it should start within a couple of seconds. If it won't start on gas, pull start it in diesel. After it is warm, switch to gas and see if it will run. If it doesn't run at that point you can probably determine whether you have a gas or ignition problem.
