Fred it sounds like some of the cardboard is missing in that starter switch after you took it apart last time. You are definitely grounding internally to get sparks while NOT activating the switch. NAPA part number is ST6 ECH. I doubt IH still makes those. The NAPA part looks like the original. #4 battery cable is not really heavy enough Fred. If you are 6 volt, I recommend 1 gauge.
