Thanks all - I"ll take your suggestions to heart. I did buy a new switch as I had no choice but to get the tractor started this weekend. However, I"ll have the starter looked at this week before I burn out another switch. I "ll also get my hands on the starter draw meter first.
The comment to push the starter hard is interesting to me. I"ve been around all types of machines all my life (basic to ultrasophisticated) and the rule was always firm but gentle. I"ll try to be a bit firmer on the button from here on out.....
